It has never been so important to reforest the sea, for maintaining people's lives and nature on the planet. Every hour we lose 2 football fields of seagrass meadows. But this decline can be reverted.

We can preserve the seagrass meadows that still exist in Portugal. This is Ocean Alive main goal.

We can all be Keepers of the Sea.

“Ocean Alive has a unique vision for reviving Europe’s coasts by restoring the natural seagrass environment, engaging the local community and led by women. This is the foundation for thriving habitats, and the fisheries on which coastal communities depend. At a time when our oceans are in crisis and our communities are divided, we need this kind of vision and inspiration to show how things can be done.”

Reforest the Sea

Reforesting the Sea means, first and foremost, preserving the marine forests that still exist. Before planting or seeding, it is necessary to remove the threats to the seagrass meadows: poor water quality, anchors, and destructive fishing techniques. A sea with forests helps us to fight biodiversity loss and climate change. Imagine if we could return the forests to the sea: this is our work in the Sado estuary!

We see the estuary as a landscape resulting from the connectivity of its marine forests; seagrass meadows, salt marshes, algae, and oyster reefs. With this vision, we develop conservation and restoration projects.

Learn more about the seagrass meadows and discover where these forests exist in Portugal.

On 6 years of our history, we have placed the seagrass meadows on the map. We brought to the public the knowledge about them, raised awareness and showed where they are. We advocated for seagrass meadows with politicians and decision-makers, so they are able to recognize their importance. We changed behaviors, mobilized the community and volunteers to clean the sea.

We valued the wisdom of the women in the fishing community by creating jobs that protect the seagrass meadows. Today, these women, the Keepers of the Sea, overflow the estuary and inspire other women from the estuaries and seas.
This is our path: to professionalize the Keepers of the Sea and engage a larger community to preserve the seagrass meadows in Portugal.

We are lifted by the dream of Together Reforesting the Sea.

Seagrass meadows are declining globally, they are among the most valuable and least known habitats.

Ocean Alive created an action plan to address the loss of seagrass meadows: tThe Guardians of Seagrass Meadows Program. Through this program, companies and citizens support Ocean Alive in ensuring the mapping of the seagrass meadows in the Sado estuary, carried out by the Keepers of the Sea.

In four years, we have mapped 29 meadows, totaling 190.91 hectares. Discover their location here and contribute to their conservation!
