CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION OF THE BASE-FERRY SEAGRASS MEADOW

Making Base-ferry Seagrass Meadow known and engaging the local community in its conservation.

START: MAY 2022

END: ongoing

FUNDING:

An initiative of Ocean Alive in partnership with ACTIVOBANK.

This project aims to raise awareness about the conservation state of the Base-ferry Seagrass Meadow. Scientific diving campaigns will provide us with knowledge about the area of the seagrass meadow, which marine species live there, if the seagrass meadow is in a good or bad conservation state, and which are the evidences of its degradation as well as the causes of such degradation. This knowledge will support the restoration strategy of the seagrass meadow. Then, local community, entities, and decisions-makers will be engaged in the implementation of this strategy.

The project also aims to provide an answer to one of the causes of degradation of the seagrass meadow, previously identified: boating and mooring practices. Awareness-raising campaigns will promote individual behaviour change and engage the local community related to recreational boating and maritime tourist activity to disseminate good practices. We will also engage the local authorities in solving the problem by creating a " seagrass friendly boating” through regulation.
