CONSERVATION
AND RESTORATION OF SOLTRÓIA
SEAGRASS MEADOW

Restore the scar caused by the mooring cable and mitigate
the anchor harbor impact on the integrity of the seagrass meadow.

START: NOVEMBRO 2021

END: PROJETO EM CURSO

The project aims to (1) repair the scar of the Cymodocea nodosa seagrass meadow caused by the mooring cable of the recreational boat harbor and (2) place mooring buoys in the moorings of the anchors located in the seagrass meadow, as a mitigation measure.

The project aims to achieve the direct restoration of 100 m2 and indirect restoration of 500m2 of the seagrass meadow impacted by the cable and also the recovery of the seagrass meadow through the mitigation of the action of the moorings of the anchors with the placement of friendly buoys.

The scientific work, under the protocol, is developed by a team of marine biologists from Ocean Alive in partnership with a team from CCMAR - Center for Marine Sciences, University of Algarve.

In a first moment we removed the mooring cable of the recreational boats harbor that was located in the Cymodocea nodosa seagrass meadow and characterized its impact on the seagrass meadow.

We mapped the seagrass meadow and mapped and characterized the anchors belonging to the fishing boat harbor located in the seagrass meadow. We presented the first results of the characterization of the seagrass meadow around the anchors and took the first steps in sensitizing the anchors' owners for the placement of friendly buoys.
